The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 13 - 15, 1962 Rowena Marries



Thursday, September 13, 1962

Partly cloudy, foggy, some showers. Well, Fern and Lloyd left tonight at 730 for good old Maine from Ohio. Betty and I done some work upstairs. Cleaned up the house. I done a little cooking.



Friday, September 14, 1962 FERN AND LLOYD CAME HOME

We have a nice day. Well today we done up all the housework. Went down and checked at Fern and Lloyd’s. I washed my hair, took a bath. Got ready to go to Portland to meet Fern and Lloyd. Blanche called. Also Dolores. We left about 445, met Fern and Lloyd at Muriel’s about 530. We enjoyed the exciting things they told us about their trip coming home. I went to June’s after I got home. Got my hair done. Letter from MIKE.



Saturday, September 15, 1962 Rowena married this p.m.

A very nice day, on the cool side. Blanche came over. She and I to town in a.m. I done up the work, called at Fern and Lloyd’s. In p.m. Betty, Blanche and I to Rowena and David Marcia’s wedding with Jeanie Davis. Bob and Blanche here for supper. Blanche and Betty drove over to Bob’s. Lil Edson is better and up. Betty got a letter from Mike.
