The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 13 - 16, 1962



Saturday, October 13, 1962 Pigs Went, Camera Came

A very nice day. We done up the work. I done a little cooking. In p.m. Dorothea and I went down to George and Thena’s, called the Jeans. Came home, got supper. Billie and Dennis killed the pigs today. Betty’s camera came today. It is a swell outfit. She didn’t feel too good all day.



Sunday, October 14, 1962

A very nice day. The Crooks and Adairs all took a nice long ride up to Andover, Maine and up through northern Maine. A beautiful day. A nice ride and a delicious dinner. Had a good time. All went in Billie’s car. Rowena and her husband called for a minute. We enjoyed Jeff so much today. He is real cute and everything he does I think is smart.






Monday, October 15, 1962

A nice day. I washed but with all the company,dogs etc. I was so late getting it done. In PM Blanche came over, got Mama, Dorothea, Dennis and Jeff. They went over to see Mrs. Edwards at the dog kennel. 




Tuesday, October 16, 1962

Very nice day. Warm. We done up the work. Cooked. Blanche called. Dolores called. Dorothea, Betty and Dennis over to Edwards dog kennel. I done a lot of telephoning to people inviting them for the shower. Dorothea prepared a snack for tonight. We had the family here for pictures on Thena’s slide. Very nice and Dorothea and Dennis showed some. Very nice ones they took too.
