The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 10- 12, 1962 Dorothea is back in Bridgton!!!



Wednesday, October 10, 1962 The Day I Have Been Waiting For ~ 2 years and 9 months

Rain rain rain. Yes rain is all we get. No Adairs up to 7 PM. Blanche, Betty and I sat up and waited last night all night. Today done up the work. Churned. Blanche here most of the day. Fern, Lloyd and Charles called. Also Aunt Ava. We have watched and watched. They don’t come. I’m worried. WELL AT 830 THEY CAME. Dorothea, Dennis and Dear little Jeff. He is the cutest little fellow. And four dogs. We are so glad to see them all and Dorothea was so glad to get home.




Thursday, October 11, 1962

Today was cloudy and rain showers. Cleared some in late p.m. We talked and talked. Fern and Lloyd called. In p.m. we went to town. Dennis got shoes. Betty went to the doctors. She is all right except a little too fat. Dorothea got me some slippers. We called at Barbara’s. Barbara up here in evening. Betty showed her wedding gifts and her snapshots.

Friday, October 12, 1962

Showers today. Cleared late p.m. Tonight is a nice moonlit night. Betty, Dawn and I went to Brunswick Naval Air Force Base to shop. First time I was ever there. I liked it very much. Came home. Dorothea had a very good supper ready. Today Brud and three of his children called and Dolores also Blanche. Billie went to the Fair at Sandwich, New Hampshire with Alice and Lawrence Boynton. After Bill and I got home from town, Dorothea, Betty, Bill and I to town. Dorothea drove and Betty drove from corner home. Jeffrey went to town with Bill and I. I bought him some gifts. He was so pleased. Billie home from Fair about 10 PM.
