The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 16 - 19, 1962



Sunday, September 16, 1962

A nice day, on the cool side. I cooked and done housework. Betty and I up to Blanche and Bob’s. Dolores, Kennie, Dot, Fern and Lloyd and Art Ward called. Billie helped Bob to clean his well. Then he finished the ceiling upstairs. In evening Billie, Betty and I took a pie and some tarts up to Chet and Lil. I took a pie over to Bob today also. Cow is not too good today.



Monday, September 17, 1962 GOT PULLETS

On the cloudy side. I washed, clothes didn’t dry too good. Betty and I called at Ferns. Dolores called a minute, she went away today to her brothers at Standish. Bill worked in the bedroom tonight, got it ready to paint. LETTER FROM ADAIR’S. A nice letter from Dennis explaining about their trip coming home etc. They move to a hotel on September 21, leave October 2. Arrive October 3 at McGuire Air Force Base on their way to Michigan where they will get settled and then come to Maine for a visit. Billie, Betty and Fern went to North Paris and got 14 Rhode Island Reds. Very pretty.



Tuesday, September 18, 1962

Betty done some ironing. I did a little too, worked upstairs. In evening Bill painted the room upstairs. Kay here in p.m. for supper and all night. Billie, Betty and I did the hens. Betty and Kay to town in evening. Kennie, Dot, Bob, Blanche and Kennard called. Killed hens.



Wednesday, September 19, 1962

A nice day. We cleaned the bedroom, it looks very nice. Also cleaned up other rooms. The newly decorated room looks nice. Kay here today. She and Betty down to Ferns in PM. Kay put Ferns hair up. I finished my ironing. Fern and Kay here for a chicken supper. Sent Mike a box of cookies, donuts and brownies.
