The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Thursday, November 1, 1962 TOOMAINE TO HOSPITAL

RAIN all day. It cleared late p.m. In the evening the stars came out. Billie home from work at 11. Milked and to bed. This is the last time he works on the midnight shift. Betty worked on her Christmas order. Fern, Bill and I down to Ferns. Betty pin curled Ferns hair. Then Fern came up here for the night. I didn’t do much except ironed, cooked, cleaned up the chambers. Aunt Ava came over, brought Mama over some Deep Heat. Bill feels better. Today TooMaine operated on. He was so sick and drowsy all day. Betty and Randy took him over to Norway in Billie’s car.

A cloudy, stormy (snow and rain) day. I done up the housework, cooked. Betty got ready to go away, but didn’t go. She was disappointed. Rain, snow, sleet and no good tires on the car. She, Bill and I to town. She paid for a brand-new crib. Got a pair of new slacks and socks. Bought car bed from Georgette True. George, Thena and Jean and Fern all here for supper and evening. Billie worked for Lawrence Boynton in PM.

Sunday, November 4, 1962

Cleared off in a.m., clouded up in PM. Bill, Betty and I down to Gordon’s and Sally’s. Bill and Betty went and got the new tires for the car and put them on. Betty out practicing driving in p.m. with Randy. I wrote to Mike. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Bob, Blanche and Art Ward called. Mama not too good today.
