The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 13 - 16, 1962 A Christmas Surprise!!


Thursday, December 13, 1962 DOROTHEA AND JEFFREY CAME about 2 AM

A nice crisp day. We all are a flutter with our big surprise of last night. Betty, Jeff and I went down in the woods, got a small Christmas tree for Aunt Ava. Betty and Jeff done the decorating outside. Fern and Lloyd called, Blanche and Aunt Ava. Dorothea seems pleased to be home. She has come home till after Christmas. We are so glad. It was such a surprise.




Friday, December 14, 1962

Cloudy and some light snow. Gee, I overslept this morning. Bill home sick today. Dorothea and I done up the work. Got Mike’s package off, got stamps. I cleaned up the house, washed upstairs windows. Betty, Dorothea, Jeff and I to town in p.m. Did Mama’s Christmas shopping for her. Paid all the taxes. What a relief.



Saturday, December 15, 1962

A nice cold day. Betty down to the doctors. Dorothea to the post office to mail her cards. Billie worked for Lawrence Boynton. Bill back to work this morning. Cow bred.




Sunday, December 16, 1962

Another nice day, very cold though. We got up late, had breakfast, got the work done. Betty, Dorothea, Jeff and I took off and went to Auburn and took Betty’s gifts up. Kennie, Dot here, Fern, Lloyd and Bob. Dorothea, Jeff down to Barb’s tonight. Billie up to Chet’s. Over to Phil Hunt’s over to North Norway. Bill fixed the oven on electric stove. Bill called out early to sand.
