The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 28 - 31, 1962



Sunday, October 28, 1962

Partly cloudy, warmer. Back to standard time. We washed and put the storm windows on. Bill and Gordon fixed up under the house for winter and put a new sink spout in. Betty cleaned up the car. She went to Auburn and Lewiston with Randy to see Alice and Bennie. Kennie, Dot, Fern, Lloyd, Bob and Blanche called. Billie had to work tonight. He and Dick Fleck came up for lunch. Storm windows.




Monday, October 29, 1962

A nice day. Cold and windy. Blanche and I went to Portland. She went to finish her and Roberts Christmas shopping. Letters from Dorothea and Mike. Billie began the late shift tonight, went to work at 12:30 AM. Cold windy day. LETTERS FROM DOT, DEN, JEFF AND DADDY MIKE.



Tuesday, October 30, 1962

Partly cloudy. Cold. I washed, hung the clothes on the front porch for first time. I cooked. Mrs. Hansen called me, she wants me to work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday nights next week. Fern, Lloyd called also Blanche, Minnie and her boy came down to call. Clyde Russell to hook up their gas stove. Bill down to Gordon’s in evening.



Wednesday, October 31, 1962

Rain rain. Quite a miserable day and evening. We was supposed to take TooMaine to doctors, but we couldn’t. Bill sick. Betty and I up to Randy’s a little while.
