The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 24 - October 1, 1962



Monday, September 24, 1962

I washed, not too good drying. Bill worked on porch. My clothes didn’t dry too good. Fair. Betty and I up to Blanche’s and got a bureau. Blanche and Fern and Lloyd called.



Tuesday, September 25, 1962

A nice warm day. Bill still working on porch. Lloyd came up and cut up the meat. I done the ironing. Cut and wrapped some meat. Bill wrapped meat. Billie took hamburger down to be ground. He brought Fern back, we had cheese hamburgers. Billie all riled up. Betty and I got a desk up to Blanche.



Wednesday, September 26, 1962

Cloudy, rained in the night. Today I done up the work. Worked on the meat after Lloyd got it cut up. Bill still working on porch. Betty helped him. Gordon called, he helped Bill to get the boards sanded for porch floor. Billie ground more beef tonight. He didn’t feel good. All nerved up and upset. Three pullet eggs.



Thursday, September 27, 1962

Cloudy and rain. Cows tested for bangs this morning. Bill worked at Lloyd’s. I done up my regular work.
