The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 1 - 4, 1963





Tuesday, January 1, 1963

Cold. Bill called to work at 8 AM. Worked until noon. Dorothea and Betty did the wash last night. I hung it up this morning. Dorothea did up the housework. Kennie and Dot called. Bob and Blanche. Fern and Lloyd. Bennie and Lou called and got Timmy. Dennis called and talked to Dorothea. MIKE called Betty which made a happy light in Betty’s eyes. Mike too was please. We watched the big Rose Bowl parade in California.



Wednesday, January 2, 1963

Mild. A very nice mild day. Blanche here and fixed Mama’s chair. Fern, Lloyd called, Kennie and Dot also Rosalie. Dorothea and Jeff over to Blanche and Bob’s for PM and supper. Betty and I up to Bob Allen’s after supper. Also called at Ferns. Also we went to town after supper. Dorothea took the car and went down town. Betty’s license came today.



Thursday, January 3, 1963

Betty got her check today. She and I to town. We paid bills etc. Rosalie called in evening. Bill, Betty and I down to Dawn’s. No word from Mike.

Friday, January 4, 1963

Cloudy and mild. Cleaned up the house. Betty mad all day, to town. Got the car and rode out. Betty, Dorothea, Jeff and I to town in evening.
