The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 6 - 10, 1962



Tuesday, November 6, 1962

Rain. A miserable day. I ironed, we cooked. Billie home with a bad eye and his arm lame. Betty and I to town with Fern and Lloyd. Worked tonight from 7 to 11 PM. Betty and Randy out driving. Election Day. I went down and voted with Fern and Lloyd.




 
Wednesday, November 7, 1962 LETTERS from Dorothea and Mike

A beautiful day. Betty and I over to Weldon’s in a.m. Betty got snaps from Mike. Three fat letters. We had a nice big letter from the Adair’s too. We laid a rug in Betty’s room, moved the desk up. I worked at Hansens tonight from 6:30 to 11 PM. Gordon here in evening.



Thursday, November 8, 1962

A nice day. We cleaned up the chambers. Betty picked over some boxes. Fern, Lloyd called in p.m. Betty got another letter from Mike today.



Friday, November 9, 1962

Another nice day. I got Billie’s insurance off. Wrote to Norma Gay. Cleaned up the downstairs. Blanche called. She and Betty to Norway. In evening we went to town. TooMaine had a good time outside today.

Saturday, November 10, 1962

RAINED RAINED. Rain so awful hard all day. Not too cold. Betty and I got the work done up. In p.m. she and I with Randy went up to New Hampshire to find the discount stamp store. Came home, picked up Fern. She was here for supper and till midnight. Billie worked at Lawrence’s butchering all day.
