The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 21 - 24, 1978

 

Sunday, May 21, 1978

 

Clear and a few wind clouds. The wind blowed hard. They worked at the shelter all day. Kim up here for breakfast then went home. Kim has asthma problems, not very good. Got flowers for garden. Sat the ones out next to the house.

 

 

 

Monday, May 22, 1978

 

It was a nice day, kind of on the cloudy windy side. Fern, Es and I down to Fern’s. We did the greens. I came home, got a chicken pie made, picked over D. greens for supper.

 

 

 

Tuesday, May 23, 1978

 

A very nice sunny day. I washed garage windows. Did some wash. I got some outside windows washed again so Billie could get the screens on. I also got my bedroom windows done. Billie put the screens on after supper. I made or cooked some greens. I done a lot of other jobs today. Bill and Betty worked up to Joy’s. Mowing, getting the garden ready etc. Made rhubarb sauce for the first time. Kimmy on a field trip today with her class. Keith finished the bulldozing, has a little more to do tomorrow. I set out rest of the flowers.

 

 

 

Wednesday, May 24, 1978 Carmen and Donald Levine

 

A beautiful day. I did a very big Spring wash. A lot of hand washing. Bill worked at Betty’s. I washed floors etc. Donny Levine and Carmen called on the way home. Keith came and got his tractor tonight,  after putting the finishing touches on.
