The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

It was cloudy when we got up, it began to clear about 7:30. Fern and I down to Betty’s today, helped her clean cupboards. We got a call from Bill. He can come home. So Billie and I picked them up at about 5 PM.

A quite nice day until late PM it was snow flurries and rain. What a mess. Anyway I did a very big wash. Bill down to the hospital for blood test this morning. He is pleased to be home. He is still on the liquid diet. He looks awful. Betty painted her kitchen wood work and varnished today. I went down town and got Pa’s groceries for Betty. Bill is so weak.

Thursday, March 30, 1978 BILL TO MERCY HOSPITAL

A real like spring day, clear, cloudy and cold-ish. Today Dorothea came up and got Bill and I, we took Bill to the Mercy Hospital for an examination of the colon and bowels. Nothing showed up at all. Dr. Polneri(?) said there was a tumor but it can’t be found. Bill has had about 25 or 30 x-rays all kinds of tests and examinations but nothing has shown up. Now he has got to have the stool examined once a week and blood count every two weeks. Then they will have to go further with him. He is in bad shape. At this time the bleeding has stopped. If it don’t begin again he may be okay. Time will tell. Fern down to Betty’s. I did a big ironing this a.m. Fern still very lame.

A quite nice day. I did a wash, dusted, washed windows etc. I was very busy all day. Bill got quite tired. Fern not any different. Billie picked the groceries up tonight when he came home from work. Betty and Dawn cleaned Betty’s house, finished the kitchen. Then the coffee group came. Randy Smart and Robin were married tonight. Then a reception was held for them at Ilan and Minnie’s.
