The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Saturday, May 13, 1978 CHAIR

A quite nice day. I got up, got some work done. Dorothea and Dave came. While Dorothea took me to furniture stores and to Lake Region Furniture in North Windham. We bought a hideaway bed couch and a brand-new chair, a Mother’s Day gift from Billie. We came home, I got supper to going. Betty and kids up to see the new chair. Betty had Doctor for her neck. Dorothea and David here for supper. They worked on the shelter today. David helped.

Was a very nice sunny warm day, some wind. I did my washing because the weather is not going to be good tomorrow they say. I also did my ironing. I vacuumed and dusted too. This was Mother’s Day. A brand-new couch and chair from Billie, $10 check from Dorothea, a trip to the antique shop from Betty, a card and pretty sun ornament from Kim, a card and a very pretty wall plaque from Carmen and I card and a nice book of Roots from Zak. Also cards from Dorothea, Betty and Jeff. A very nice day and I’m very pleased with all. Betty’s back a dite better.

It was cloudy all day and rained hard at times. I got my work done up and went to the orthodontist with Kim and came home so Kim got to school in PM. On our way home we stopped at the Antique Barn in North Windham. For Mother’s Day from the Horton’s. I got some old things and new garden basket etc. It has rained so awful hard all day. A miserable day. Betty’s back is much better.
