The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 24 - 27, 1978 Easter Sunday

Friday, March 24, 1978 DAWN SOLD

A beautiful day. I have washed, washed windows, dusted and ironed. I’ve been very busy all day. In evening Billie and I went down to see Bill. He wasn’t feeling very good. Betty and Dawn finished moving Dawn today. She is now all done at Sebago.

Saturday, March 25, 1978

It was kind of cloudy and some sun. I did my cooking and cleaned up the house. The floors washed etc. I got the preparations ready for tomorrow. In evening Betty and I went down to see Bill. Nothing has been found out what ails Bill so now he has got to take new test all over. Carmen to the movies.

Sunday, March 26, 1978 Easter Sunday

It was cloudy when we got up. It began to snow in mid-forenoon. About 12:30 the guests began to arrive. Dawn, Mabel then Betty, Walt and children came. We had a ham dinner (baked ham, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, spinach greens, salad, shell beans, hot cross buns, bread, blueberry pie, custard pie, cookies Mabel brought.) After dinner Betty, Walt and children went to the hospital to see Bill. Came home and we had sandwiches. Esther called today. She wanted to know about Bill. We told her of Fern’s accident.

Monday, March 27, 1978 Bill not any better

A very heavy rain all day. The ground was covered with snow all over when we got up. It continued to snow until about 10 AM. Betty came up and got Fern and I. We went down there and cleaned up her house then cleaned all her cupboards in the kitchen. Fern did the draws. After supper Billie and I went down to see Bill. He is quite down at the dumps because they haven’t found out anything about him. He wants to come home. Dorothea is upset because Jeff hasn’t any work and things are confusing down there.
