The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 13 - 16, 1978

Monday, March 13, 1978

A most beautiful day. I did a big wash. Did regular work, down to Betty’s, helped her a dite. Came home, did some more wash. I cooked a smoke shoulder for Betty and a hamshank for my supper. Betty went to get paper for papering. Zak back to school after being home with a cold. Bill is so docile sitting around here. Billie started working on the old time this morning or summer time at seven instead of eight.

Tuesday, March 14, 1978 Carmen and Betty gone to dentist

Kind of a cloudy, a dite of sun. I did my ironing, a big one too. I defrosted refrigerator and done the housework. Bill about the same. Betty and Carmen gone to Dr. Curran, dentist doctor. It began to snow, sleet and rained in PM. It made very icy traveling.

 Wednesday, March 15, 1978 Papa’s 108th birthday

A quite nasty day after last night’s rain. The traveling isn’t good. Zak’s class at school gone on a tour to Cape Elizabeth today. Betty called this morning. Bill looks bad. He isn’t at all good. He took Billie’s car to the garage this morning. Ilan went down and picked them up. I didn’t do much today. I got my coupons ready for the store.

Thursday, March 16, 1978 Kim to the dentist in South Portland

It was cloudy but no storm. Temp not bad, at times there was sun. I got my work done up early. Got ready and went to South Portland with Betty and Kim. She went to the orthodontist. Then we went to the mall. Did a small dite of shopping. We called at Dorothea’s. She came in with us in her own car. We got Kimmy back in time for afternoon school classes. Saw Zak at the school. Bill still quite sick, he finally said I could call the Dr. for him. So he has an appointment for tomorrow.
