The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Cloudy and rain. I went with Betty today to Norway to shop for Zak. Bill went too. Billie sick today. I did my groceries over there.

 

 

 

Friday, April 21, 1978

 

A miserable day. Cloudy and showers. I been busy all day. I cleaned some draws. Dusted, washed windows etc. Billie a dite better. Esther and I called at the hospital to see Dorothy Prescott. She looks bad.

 

 

 

Saturday, April 22, 1978

 

A nice day. Snow went a lot today. I done a lot today. Got my desk draws cleaned. Billie is still not very good. The wind has blown a bit all day. I did a big wash. The New Hope Farm had a supper over to Harrison tonight. Kimmy not very good today.

 

 

 

Sunday, April 23, 1978

 

A quite sunny day, on the windy side. I done up my regular work and did a ironing and Bill and I called at Dorothea and David’s. Came home, read the newspaper. Billie a dite better today.

 

 

 

Monday, April 24, 1978 school began today

 

A mixed day of weather. Cloudy, sunny, on the cool windy side. I done up my work. Got at the cleaning early. I cleaned the kitchen and bathroom ceilings and walls, also the radiators. Billie came home early. He was sick, also no work at the shop. Bill to the doctors, got to go again tomorrow. Carmen is rehearsing all week for the play.
