The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

May 31 - June 2, 1972 Zak and Cliff Operated On


Wednesday, May 31, 1972 ZAK OPERATED

I got up early this morning and went down to Betty’s. Zak was operated on again today for the same thing he has had done about three times. Poor little kid. Cliff entered the Maine Medical Center for prostate gland operation. Walt up to Augusta again today. Esther called a minute tonight. It was very nice in a.m. it clouded up and we had bad or heavy afternoon showers. Carmen and Zenya to school on their bikes again. They got home between the showers.



Thursday, June 1, 1972 CLIFF OPERATED ON, WALT PROMOTED

Rain again. I got up early and went down to Betty’s. She left to go to Portland at about 7:45. I done up Betty’s work, got Kimmy ready for school and came home after she left for school. Betty home early today. Today Cliff was operated on for prostate gland trouble. Esther was there and Dorothea and Betty.  Betty and I called at Ferns in evening. Dorothea was with Esther and Betty all day. Walt was promoted today to Resident Engineer over the whole Portland area. We are very pleased.

(Nanny saved EVERYTHING!)



Friday, June 2, 1972 Zak came home, $80.00

Today Zak came home from Maine Medical Center. He is kind of weak, but pretty good. Kimmy home from school today, not too good. Throwing up and tired. I was down to Hortons all a.m., came home, did a dite of washing, to town with Betty. Fern baby sat, done grocery shopping. In evening Esther came over. We called at Betty’s then at Fern’s. Mowed lawns tonight.
