The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 16 - 19, 1972 Susan Divorce

Sunday, July 16, 1972

A very hot day. I done up my regular work. Relaxed rest of the day. Picked couple boxes of berries. Bill watched ballgames. Billie with Lawrence picking up cattle etc. Walt and kids summing. Went for a small ride in PM.

Monday, July 17, 1972 Judd gone, Bill worked at Walt’s

I washed. Billie worked at Walt’s painting. Billie home today. Betty and I went to Dawn’s to her barn sale. Betty bought a small wall safe. I bought a few things. We came home, she took kids swimming. We picked strawberries. They came and got Judd. The police force are going to train him to work on the force. I feel so sorry for him. I hope he will be happy in his new role in life in time.

We are having some very nice hot days. I washed, done up regular work. I went down to Betty’s very early. Betty went to Portland with Walt to bring her car home. I stay down there, washed, folded clothes. Washed kitchen windows. Came home, got my wash out. Betty got home about 11:30. She brought Italian sandwiches for lunch. Bill worked again today. I went down there with Betty to take kids to swimming lessons. Had peas tonight. I talked with Dorothea, she and Dave got the room papered (Jeff’s). They are planning a good week. Hope will be good weather.
