The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 20 - 23, 1972

Thursday, July 20, 1972 Walter III 44 today, Judd escaped

A very nice day. Bill worked at Walt’s painting. Betty did lawns and I took care of kids and house. Betty went to Oxford and got her horse ornament and wagon wheel to put up over the barn. Bill and she was all afternoon putting that up. In early p.m. Dorothea and David called to take the kids over to Moose Pond to a picnic lunch and swimming at Ruth Hatch’s cottage. Betty had a cake and ice cream for Walt’s birthday. Today Judd escaped from his prison cell. The police came up to get Betty in p.m. to see if Judd had come back home. Poor dog, it breaks one’s heart to know how he must be feeling.

Friday, July 21, 1972 Milan 53

Showery early this morning. Today was a rainy, showery day. Bill couldn’t work at Betty’s. We went to town. Betty and I. Milan is 53 years old today.

Saturday, July 22, 1972 The best summer day we have had all summer, no Judd

Today it was a nice sunny day, but it clear day. No humidity and a nice breeze. I done regular work, washed kitchen, bathroom floors and washed living room rug. Betty and Walt worked on play area for the kids. In p.m. they looked for a dog. Judd has not shown up. Today Billie traded his steers for two black white headed heifers with Lawrence.
