The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

July 24 - 27, 1972


Monday, July 24, 1972 Cloudy when we got up

Up about seven. Done up regular work. Washed a big wash. Went looking out some leads on Judd, but didn’t find him. I hope he is okay. Bill finished up at Betty’s today. It looks very nice. I’ll painted in cleaned up, her shrubbery looks very nice too.



Tuesday, July 25, 1972 Bill worked at Jean’s, Pat hospital, Carmen to hospital with a bad eye

A nice day, it cleared after being kind of cloudy. We went out looking for Judd. Took kids swimming. We went to do some shopping but had bad showers and came back to get the kids. Kim was at Susan’s. Susan is going to move up to Esther’s while they go to Ohio. Pat had a bad spell this morning and they took her to the NC MC hospital. Very high blood pressure. Joy came and her son. She went by ambulance. Betty had to take Carmen tonight. She had a very bad eye infection caused from being in the lake. That water is polluted. We had a very bad shower tonight. A nice day.



Wednesday, July 26, 1972 saw Judd tonight, Bill worked at Jean’s

Got my work done up and went down to Betty’s. We cleaned out her hens and cleaned up the barn. I washed. Bill worked at Jean’s. In evening Betty and I went down to the hospital to see Pat. As we were coming home we saw Judd in the police cruiser riding with the police officer. He looked beautiful sitting up there. I hope he is happy. We had showers tonight.  Just rain.



Thursday, July 27, 1972 Got a new puppy

A very nice day till late p.m. They got quite cloudy but NO RAIN. I was at Betty’s most of the day while she mowed lawns. Today Jean Edwards called Betty, they have a new puppy. She and the kids, Carmen and Kim, went after her. Esther came over, she and I picked rest of the beet greens. In evening she and I called at Fern’s while Lloyd and Billie got haircuts. Susan moved some of her things up to Esther’s.
