The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

June 22 - 25, 1972

Thursday, June 22, 1972 Rain

Cloudy, rainy. The wind blowed quite hard in late p.m. Kids up here in a.m. Carmen went to Norway with Es and Betty. Betty bought me a porch rocker and candy. I defrosted refrigerator and ironed. Bill got muffler put on car, down to Jean’s in p.m. Kimmy has a earache today, bad cold. Carmen went home tonight after being up for a few days and nights. Zak okay today.

Friday, June 23, 1972 RAIN

Another miserable day. Kim’s cold a dite better. Betty took me to town. Esther went with us. Carmen and Kim home. It rained so hard. Bill worked at Jean’s.

Saturday, June 24, 1972 15 minutes cleared weather

RAIN. It was another miserable day. I cooked beans, made a cake and pie. Kimmy was here most of the day. During the day we had 15 minutes of clearing or partial I should say. Back to rain. There was a small thundershower. Walt worked. Bill worked at Jean’s. Billie didn’t do much today.

Sunday, June 25, 1972 one hour of cleared weather

RAIN. A cloudy dreary miserable day. It rained, it was cloudy, it was cleared for a short time. Dot came up and spent the day. Late in the p.m. we saw blue sky first time for one solid week. Sun shown for one hour. Then it got clouded up as quick as it could. This is all due to the awful Hurricane Agnes. We’re lucky to only get heavy rain. Had a chicken dinner. Es and Cliff here in evening. They took Susan’s two boys for a ride and had them up for the day and dinner. A little enjoyment they got. Bill and Billie got the lawns mowed during the lull in the storm.
