The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 8 - 11, 1972 Road trips

Tuesday, August 8, 1972 $50.00

Up early, got ready. Washed then got things ready and left for a days ride up through Dixfield Notch and down through Errol, Newry, Upton, Bethel and home. Had a very nice trip and a good time. We had a picnic lunch, it was cold eating. Billie, Fern, Lloyd and I. Walt’s brother and wife, sister and her family came. Walt home, he and Betty worked upstairs.



Wednesday, August 9, 1972 Bill worked at Jean’s, showers today

A nice day. I done up my work. Kids here. We got ready and left about noon or a dite later after we washed etc. Went down to Dorothea and Dave’s. We visited and then went down to Alfred to Leedy’s for supper. We had a very good supper and good time. Came home the same way we went down through Sebago, Baldwin, Steep Falls, Standish etc. This was a birthday gift from Billie.



Thursday, August 10, 1972

A pretty good day. Nice and sunny in a.m. It was cold. Billie, Fern and I went down and got some butter in Cornish at (?) Ushin Hill. A very nice ride. In p.m. I went down to Betty’s. Billie and I picked string beans. Fern, Lloyd and I fixed them and I went down after supper, got them into the deep-freeze. Betty and Walt worked upstairs, Bill helped. On the cold side.



Friday, August 11, 1972 Bill worked at Walt’s

I done up my work. Went down to Betty’s in picked peas. Bill worked at Walt’s. We had showers. A lot of sunshine. Billie took me to town in a.m. to do shopping.
