The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

A pretty good day, some clouds. Carmen to school on her bike. Her last day for this year. She goes into the fourth grade next year. Zak very sick boy today. In p.m. Betty took Zak back to Portland to Maine Medical Center. This forenoon we went to Norway to do some shopping. Got a gift for Karen’s wedding reception. Esther over to Betty’s all day. Carmen up here for supper. I went down there to Betty’s after supper to stay with Esther. Kimmy has a cold.

Friday, June 16, 1972 $194 from Miss Jones

It clouded up and rained hard today. I done up my work. Went down to Betty’s. The kids, Carmen and Kim and I cleaned up her house for her while she was with Zak at the hospital. Then we came back here. Bill came home and he and I went to town. Betty said when she got home Zak wasn’t at all good. Temp is up. Dorothea went in with her. Bill worked only a few hours at Gordon’s.

Saturday, June 17, 1972 partly cloudy

I baked beans today and made a cake and rolls. Betty to Portland to see the boy. He wasn’t too good. Billie mowed and trimmed lawns. Bill mowed when he got home from work. Partly cloudy, temp in the 70s. Betty and Walt did their lawns for the cookout.
