The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

Cloudy in a.m. I done regular work. Kim came up. Betty and Walt to Portland to see Zak. Came home and there was a cookout at the farm in observance of Father’s Day. Good meal as usual. Kim has a cold. Thomases, Deming, Yates, Hortons and Crooks. The Wolffs came. It cleared during midafternoon.

Monday, June 19, 1972 Bill worked at Jean’s $50

Cloudy and a nasty dreary day. I got my work done up and went to see Zak at Maine Medical Center with Betty. He acts okay but maybe not too good yet. I went to the Social Security board to sign up for Social Security. Carmen still here. She and Billie had a good time today. She did the work. They relaxed. Jean paid him. Esther stayed with Kim. Kim still has a cold.

Tuesday, June 20, 1972 Zak came home

Cloudy dreary day. Today Betty brought Zak home from Maine Medical Center. He isn’t much better. He cried out coming home Betty said. Dr. Timothy don’t seem to do a thing for him. I guess they are discouraged. I hope soon he will get help. I did my work. Down to stay with the kids. Carmen still up here. Betty did some grocery shopping for me.
