The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 30 - October 3, 1966 Dorothea Goes On A Date



Friday, September 30, 1966

Cloudy and showers in a.m. It cleared in forenoon. So they had a clear day at Waterford Fair. Cold and windy but sunny. Joy and Buddy here in p.m. I done up my work. Betty took me to town to do my shopping after supper.



Saturday, October 1, 1966 3 Eggs

Rain. I got up early this morning, went down to Betty’s and stayed with the children while she went to work. It rained all day. Bill through work at 10:30 AM. Honoring Dr. Fred Skillins and during the funeral service. All stores closed for an hour too. Dorothea got fixed up and on a date tonight DAVE THOMAS. Betty and girls home early. Dorothea gave Betty a permanent.



Sunday, October 2, 1966

A fair day. Betty’s girls here. Dorothea, Jeff, Betty to the races. I didn’t do much. I washed. Billie did a lot of the fall chores. Kennie and Dot called.



Monday, October 3, 1966

A nice sunny day. We washed, clothes dried very good. Betty varnished her living room floor. Dorothea to the garage with her car. She out with Dave tonight.
