The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 2 - 5, 1966



Friday, September 2, 1966 HOT

A beautiful day, on the hot side. I done up my work, canned tomatoes, went to town. Joy and girls were over. They took a swim in the pool. Dorothea took Jeff down and got his haircut. Also she registered him for school here. Joy and Dorothea down to Barb’s and Betty’s.



Saturday, September 3, 1966 COLD

A cloudy, dreary day, on the cool side. Billie didn’t have to work. Carmen, Betty and Kimberly came with Bill. Dorothea and Jeff went to Norway with Joy and girls. Jeff got a LETTER from his father. Billie worked in the garden today. Bill mowed the weeds. Betty and I to town to shop. Fern up for supper. Sammy Knight up to look at the trailer today. Dorothea and Jeff down to Barb’s tonight. Dorothea had a Tonie. Took Mandy to the vets.



Sunday, September 4, 1966

It rained hard all day. Betty and girls here. Quite hectic today with kids and worst of all Billie now. I cooked a chicken for supper. Kennie and Dot called. Dorothea, Jeff and I down with Betty in evening. Dorothea had her car in the garage. Betty had the heat turned up at her house.



Monday, September 5, 1966

Cloudy when we got up. It cleared off and it was a nice sunny day. We cooked sirloin steaks outside, ate on the back porch. Steak, salad, grilled corn, hot rolls and pudding. Fern, Lloyd called also Joy and girls called. In evening Dorothea and I called at Lorraine and Phonie’s.
