The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 5 - 8, 1966 Kim has CHF

Saturday, November 5, 1966

A nice day. Up early and got ready and went to Lewiston with Dorothea. Went to the store and paid for her new furniture she and David will use in their new home. We went out by the apartment at North Windham where she will love. Barbara and Wesley went with us, also Kimberly. She was just as good as gold all day. Betty worked all day, took Carmen. Billie worked for Lawrence. Blanche Davenport’s funeral.

Sunday, November 6, 1966

It was a cloudy dreary day. Got up about 8:30, had breakfast. Betty brought Carmen up. Betty taken sick today. Dorothea down there. Then Bonnie came and stayed with the children. Dorothea, Dave and Jeff down to Windham to see about getting their apartment. Fern, Lloyd called after dinner. We went over to Lovell to see a beautiful house. Aunt Ava called.

Monday, November 7, 1966 Kim to NCMH

Clear and sunny. I washed. Carmen and Kim here. Dorothea to work at Pineland Hospital. Went to work at 8 AM. Got home at four. I had both of the Boutilier girls all day. Betty sick and didn’t work. She came up in p.m. for the girls, took Kim to the doctors. She was wheezing with bronchitis. Dorothea didn’t go out tonight. Dave came up here. Kimberly to the Northern Cumberland Memorial Hospital all wheezy.

Tuesday, November 8, 1966 Kim to  MMC

A dreary day. I cooked. I done a lot of odd and end jobs. Betty called Dr. Richards. Kimberly has a congestive heart failure he discovered after examining her test etc. He had her rush her right to the Maine Medical Center in Portland to a heart specialist. It was awful to see her cry when we left. Billie brought home the rest of the beef tonight.
