The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 26 - 29, 1966



Monday, September 26, 1966

Dorothea and I washed all day. A very big wash. Dorothea got a good supper. I got the clothes in, Betty got home about 12 PM. Dorothea took me to town in p.m. We took the baby home.



Tuesday, September 27, 1966

Windy. I done up my work and did my ironing. Joy called. We had donuts and coffee. Fern and Lloyd called. Dorothea over to Joys. Carmen over to Joys for a little while.



Wednesday, September 28, 1966

A beautiful mild sunny day. I got Esther’s letter off and done my work. Dorothea over to Lewiston and took another Civil Service test. Joy and Laurie went with her. Joy got a new winter coat for Laurie. Betty had a call from Mrs. Carter today. Helen Smart and Linda called.



Thursday, September 29, 1966 4 EGGS

Cloudy. It has been cloudy all day. I done up my regular work. The Boutilier girls here today. Betty took me to town. Billie got three eggs on the roost. I got one in the nest. Kennard called in p.m. Dorothea got her car fixed and done Ferns hair. A salesman called from Leisure Homes. Bill and I down to Betty’s. She cut Bill’s hair.
