The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 24 - 27, 1966 DOROTHEA GETS ENGAGED



Monday, October 24, 1966 RING

On the cool side. Had a big wash. Betty to work. Carmen here. Kimberly in the hospital. Tonight Dave gave Dorothea a engagement ring. How happy they both are.



Tuesday, October 25, 1966 KIM HOME

A very nice day. Dorothea, Carmen and I all went down to Pineland Training Center. Dorothea looking for work. We had a nice pretty ride. Came home, called at Betty’s. Joy and Laurie were there. In evening Joy and Dave called and spent the evening. Kimberly came home from hospital today. She is really good now.



Wednesday, October 26, 1966

A nice warm day. I done up regular work. Dorothea out to lunch day. She called at Uncle Lewis in a.m. She and Carmen had their hair cut at Bessie’s today. Betty worked till quite late. She and children here for supper. Dave here in evening to get Dorothea. Jeff got his school pictures. Very good. Baby all better and is so good. I did my ironing this p.m., wrote letters to Peg, George and Esther. Betty’s notice of applying for her divorces in paper today. Pres. Johnson in Vietnam and war zones.



Thursday, October 27, 1966

A beautiful day. Mild and sunny all day. Dorothea and Dave up to Vermont to his grandmothers, sisters and aunt’s. I done up my work. Betty home early. Carmen and Kimberly here. Kim is feeling real good. She is so cunning. Betty, kids and I to town and called to see the new garage at Lloyd’s. It is a dandy. I went up to the trailer. It is so pretty up there. Jeff out playing at Randy’s after supper. Also after school. Billie and Jeff down to Lawrence’s after supper. Betty gone to Augusta with Ernie tonight to get Bonnie. Dorothea got her check today. Mike called tonight, wanted to see Carmen and Kimberly.
