The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

September 18 - 21, 1966



Sunday, September 18, 1966

A nice day, on the warm side. Got up about 830. Had breakfast, done up work. Betty and children came. Lloyd came up and hauled down some more oil for trailer. Betty got ready to go to the races with Randy Harmon and some friends. Man called about the trailer. I took care of the Boutilier girls. A Mr. Richardson called to see the trailer. Kennie and Dot called.



Monday, September 19, 1966

A cloudy day. A little sunshine. I washed, clothes dried quite well. Betty came up, she went out looking for work. Got a job as an assistant in a doctors office. She is very pleased about it. She has quite a few problems to solve. Dorothea out looking for a job today. Also had some work done on her car.



Tuesday, September 20, 1966 Frost

A nice day. Had our first frost last night. I have been busy today. Made a pie, washed windows etc. etc. The Boutilier girls here today. Jeff had his picture taken today at school. He looks so nice all dressed up. Betty had some business to do today. She is still happy about her new work. We got the rest of the garden things in tonight as we expect a real heavy frost. Dorothea helped Joy today. Mike 23 years old.



Wednesday, September 21, 1966

Cloudy and rained late in p.m. and evening. Betty made preparations today to go to work tomorrow. She and I to town. She paid her rent etc.
