The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 1 - 4, 1966



Tuesday, November 1, 1966

Partly cloudy, some sunshine. I done up my regular work. Betty expected her car. I had the Boutilier girls all day. Debbie here after school. Jeff got a new guinea pig. Dave bought it for him. Dave here for lunch.



Wednesday, November 2, 1966 Dorothea called to work

It rained, on the mild side. I wrote a letter to Esther. Made a cake, done up the work. Dorothea gave Maudy a flea bath, both dogs have fleas. Dave here for lunch. Dorothea got a call from Pineland Hospital to go to work on Monday. Betty got a 1959 Ford. It is a good running car.



Thursday, November 3, 1966

Another rainy day. Very hard heavy rain all day. Dorothea and Dave over to Lewiston to do some shopping for their wedding clothes, also done some furniture shopping and picked them out a rent at North Windham. I called at Ferns in evening. Jeff and Billie got his haircut.



Friday, November 4, 1966

Very nice day, cold and windy. Dorothea up early and down town. Took her driver’s test and passed. I did a big wash. Joy called. Betty home, left the kids here. She worked for Mrs. Hansen in p.m. Came back here for supper. Dorothea and Dave out in evening. Betty took me to town.
