The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 21 - 24, 1966 Thanksgiving



Monday, November 21, 1966

Fair and sunny. I washed. Dorothea down to Barb’s to get her head (?) bed made. Carmen and Kim here. Kim is real cute now. She and Carmen good today. Joy called. I done up the rest of my work.



Tuesday, November 22, 1966

I washed windows, cleaned up the whole house. Dorothea down to Barbara’s to get the ironing done. Dorothea did it. We had the Boutilier babies today.



Wednesday, November 23, 1966 Mandy

Cold in early a.m. Up early, took care of Carmen. Betty took Kimberly to the hospital. We did a lot of cooking. Dorothea stained the headboard to Jeff’s bed and his dresser. Joy here today. Jeff home  from school till Monday. Billie home from work till Monday. Dorothea and I down town after supper. Betty took Mandy over to Dr. Gauger when she went to work. She was put to sleep. We all loved her and miss her.



Thursday, November 24, 1966 Thanksgiving

A nice day, warmer. Up early, got the turkey in, made rolls. We done up the housework. Dorothea and Dave moved a lot of their things to their new home. Betty, Carmen, Dorothea, and Jeff and Dave Thomas were the only ones we had for company today. Carmen sick today with a bad cold. In p.m. Bill and I went down to the apartment to help Dave move the things into the house. Jeff went too. Betty to Portland to get Randy. Sally and Gordon called. Billie buried Mandy. Turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, turnips, onions, shell beans, cranberry sauce, salad, rolls, nut bread, celery , lemon sponge, graham(?) pies, chocolate pie, chocolate layer cake, Indian pudding, ice cream. Sally and Gordon’s called in evening.
