The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

August 25 - 28, 1966



Thursday, August 25, 1966

Dorothea up in p.m. She is going to move down to Howard Conant’s. Kids went today. Betty, kids and I to town and then called at Ferns tonight. Billie went to Acton Fair tonight. He was so pleased to go. He left here about 9:15 PM. Dorothea didn’t move tonight. She didn’t want to go anyway.



Friday, August 26, 1966

I cleaned up the house, pick some shell beans. Betty and kids up. Dorothea finished up at Camp Woodlands today. Jeff went down with her to do some bunk picking but the others got it all before he got there. Bill, Jeff and I to town and done our shopping. Dorothea, Jeff and I up to Bob’s tonight to see Bob, Buddy, Joy and the girls.



Saturday, August 27, 1966

A beautiful day. I done up my work, cleaned up the house and washed kitchen floor. I baked beans. Betty and I to town in p.m. Fern up for supper and evening and most of evening. Dorothea down town, bought some school clothes for Jeff.



Sunday, August 28, 1966

I didn’t get up until real late Got up, did up my work. Betty brought the kids up. I took care of them while Betty cleaned her house. Kennie, Dot called. Dorothea down to Barb’s all day. A man and his wife here to see the house. A beautiful day, Bill mowed the lawns. Billie got home from Acton Fair at about 8:30 PM. Picked the lot of melons. Billie, Jeff and I up to Chet’s and Lil’s, took some veggies up.
