The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 15 - 19, 1959



Sunday, March 15, 1959 Blanche Smith’s birthday

Cloudy. Betty and Billie over to Larry Potter’s over to Harrison. Stan brought cow over. Fern, Lloyd and Raymond called. Rained in early evening.



Monday, March 16, 1959

A very nice warm day. I washed, got the clothes in and dried. Bill didn’t work or Billie. Kennard called in late p.m. Billie to town and done some business.



Tuesday, March 17, 1959

A very nice day. I cooked, churned and ironed. I took Mama’s radio back. Kennard called. Billie worked up to Chet’s. Billie got a birthday card from Dennis, Dot and Jeff. Billie got his new WHITE HEAD heifer tonight. She is a beauty.



Wednesday, March 18, 1959

On the cold side. A very nice day. I got my work done and Bill took me over to Aunt Ava’s and Uncle Lewis’s. I spent the day. Had a good time. Also a delicious meal. Billie came after me about 4 PM. She has a nice flock of chicks. Betty washed the dishes tonight. Raymond up to Vermont today. Sally up and got some eggs and cream. Billie worked this forenoon up to Chet’s.





Thursday, March 19, 1959

A nice day, sunny. I didn’t do much. Bill and I downtown, paid bills and got groceries etc. Raymond over for afternoon and to stay for supper. Betty up to Dawn’s in evening. Billie and I down to Fern and Lloyd’s in evening. A 16 PAGE LETTER from the Adair’s and a beautiful picture of Jeffrey Dennis Adair.
