The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 4 - 8, 1959



Wednesday, March 4, 1959 Warm

A bad storm in the morning, snow. School called off in middle of forenoon. Cleared off in p.m. Sally, Jean and girls called in p.m. Billie down to Marion Dews tonight to get his income tax fixed. Kennard called. DR. IRVING E. MABRY died this noon. He was a good doctor, one of the best in the world. Billie and Dorothea were his babies. Betty was Dr. Abbotts.




Thursday, March 5, 1959 Warm

A nice day. I went down and spent the day at Ferns and Lloyds. She has three dresses to fix for me. In evening Billie and I went up to Chet and Lil’s. Betty got her snaps today. They all were very good. Blanche called, she had some nice pictures of Ronald’s wedding. Bill worked at Hayd’s today. Kennie and Raymond called today. Billie downtown to get income tax to send $13 to pay.



Friday, March 6, 1959

Jeffrey Dennis Adair is eight months old today. He with his mother and dad are on their way to Riverside California after visiting with us and Dennis’s family in Michigan. A bad storm. Schools closed at noon. Billie and I to town in a.m. Didn’t do only the work today. (?)



Saturday, March 7, 1959 Nola Raye Smith’s birthday

Cloudy, a little windy. I churned and cooked. Bill worked at Hayd’s. Holly came down in late p.m. Dr. Mabry’s funeral today.



Sunday, March 8, 1959 Lila Allen Walsh 62

A nice day, cold. Done regular work. Betty painted (?). Fern, Lloyd up in p.m. I wrote a letter. Adairs called us today. They got home at 7:30 AM Western daylight time. So glad they called us.
