The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 11 - 15, 1959 Visiting with Adairs



Wednesday, February 11, 1959

We done up the work. No Dennis. Raymond called in evening. Milan’s folks called tonight. No word from Dennis. Having so much fun with Jeffrey. Billie took Dorothea out, calling at Lil’s downtown.



Thursday, February 12, 1959

Cleared off today. A nice pretty morning. Milan and Betty and Norma Gay came about 4:30 this a.m. But no Dennis yet. We done up the work. I did a little cooking. Milan’s folks left about 5:30 PM for home. Fern up this p.m. Bill worked over to Jim Chadbourne’s. Dorothea called Dennis’s folks. Also Dennis at (?) Offitt. Barbra and her boy called, also Kennard.



Friday, February 13, 1959 DENNIS CAME

A nice clear day and so warm. Today Dennis came. We met him in Portland at noon today. Dorothea, Jeffrey, Bill and I met him. We liked him so much. He is very nice. We are so pleased Dorothea has such a nice husband. Raymond called. Billie and Dennis and Dorothea and Betty downtown and around town. Denny likes here in Maine very much. Jeffrey was so glad to see his daddy.



Saturday, February 14, 1959 Linda Dianne Smith 2 yrs today

I cooked some. Betty sold Penny today. We all liked her so much and enjoyed her being here. She has been so cunning. Billie, Dorothea, Dennis and Lassie all went to town and called on the neighbors. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called in p.m. Dennis enjoying everything. In evening Dorothea and Dennis out with Barb and Phil, went bowling. In evening Kennard and Bob called.



Sunday, February 15, 1959

A nice day. Jeffrey is so cunning all the time. Fern, Lloyd, Dot, Libby, Julie Moran, Bob, Norman, Sara, Cindy, Edith and Judy. Dorothea and Dennis down to Barbra’s folks. Had a turkey dinner today, good.
