The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 25 - 29, 1958 Happy Thanksgiving



Tuesday, November 25, 1958

Been cooking some of the Thanksgiving dinner. Churned. A very nice cold day. Cold tonight. Raymond here in evening. Billie hauled vegetables from Jim’s.



Wednesday, November 26, 1958

Rain and snow. Bill didn’t work all day. Mr. Bickford here to see him. I cooked all day, cleaned up the house.



Thursday, November 27, 1958 Thanksgiving

Nice day. Had a good dinner. Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis, Blanche and Bob here for dinner. For supper Kennie, Dot, Raymond, Bob and Blanche. In p.m. Fern and Lloyd called. Turkey, roast pork, chicken, mashed potatoes, turnip, onions, shell beans, salad. Hot rolls, Graham nut bread, pumpkin, Apple, custard, date pies.



Friday, November 28, 1958

Snow in p.m. Very cold. I washed kitchen curtains and windows. Billie bought him some new clothes. It clouded up and snowed some in evening.



Saturday, November 29, 1958

Bill didn’t work. He and I went to town early in a.m. I came home, cooked, done up the work, washed kitchen floor, ironed kitchen curtains.
