The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 30, 1958 - January 4, 1959



Tuesday, December 30, 1958 Bill 50 today

He worked at Hayd’s. Betty up to Dawn’s. In evening out on a skating party. Nice day. Bruce very good. Mr. Bickford called here. Bill got check for the land of Central Maine Power Company.



Wednesday, December 31, 1958

A nice day, cooler. Bill didn’t work. He and I over to Norway, came home through Lovell. Got floor paint. In p.m. he and I to town. He paid Lin Hill etc. Paid all the bills. Aunt Ava called. Fern called. Mike here today, also David and Janice, Hayd, Helen and Raymond here in eve. End of 1958






Thursday, January 1, 1959

A good day. Bill worked over to Jim’s. Betty gone all day. I did regular work. Bruce good today. Blanche here in p.m. and watched Rose Bowl parade with us.



Friday, January 2, 1959

It snowed today. Bill didn’t work. He and Billie shoveled out the paths and driveway. Betty up to Dawn’s all day. I cleaned up the whole house. Bill got birthday card from Dorothea and family. Kennard called also Kennie. Russia sent a rocket to the moon.



Saturday, January 3, 1959

A nice day. Letter today from Adair’s. They had a nice Christmas. Betty to Portland with Dawn all day. I done up housework and cooked. To town before supper. Got a nice picture from Bill’s mother and father. Bruce quite good all day.





Sunday, January 4, 1959

Warm all day till evening. I did regular work. Charlie, Jean, Kennie, Dot and Kennard called and Raymond. Betty to movies in p.m.
