The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

October 20 - 24, 1958


Monday, October 20, 1958

A nice day, cold. I washed. Took care Bruce. He is very good so far. Delores called in a.m. Bill took Fern to town in late p.m. Letter from Adair’s.



Tuesday, October 21, 1958 Fern 56, Pig went

A very nice day, except on cool side. I cooked, wrote to the Adair’s. Mama up to Stow with Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis. Raymond Allen, Evelyn and Mary Ridlon called also Joan, Dot, Lorraine and kids. Betty and Bill up to Bill Ridlon’s after supper. Billie and I down to Ferns in evening.



Wednesday, October 22, 1958

A very nice day, I got my work done. Miss Kalwall came. Said Bruce looks good. Dolores called. I ironed in late p.m. Edith McAllister called, also Dawn and David.



Thursday, October 23, 1958

Fair in a.m., cloudy and rained in p.m. Lila McKeen  and Callie Gammon called. Dawn Parks. Bill and Evelyn Ridlon in evening. I didn’t do much today. We sent the water away to Augusta for sample. Betty at the fashion show FHA is putting it on. She is a member.



Friday, October 24, 1958

I was busy all day. Bruce been here one week today. Cold and cloudy. Fern to town with Bill and I before supper to shop.
