The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

March 9 - 14, 1959 John Crook Died



Monday, March 9, 1959

Snow this a.m. Partly cloudy in p.m. I washed. In p.m. Billie took me to town. Down to Ferns, Aunt Ava’s. Kay up here tonight. David up to play cards in evening. Got two cards from Dorothea and Dennis.



Tuesday, March 10, 1959 Jack Weymouth’s birthday

It has been a very nice day. I got the clothes in, and ironed, cooked. Billie over to Raymonds, up to Chet’s. Bill worked for Hayd today at Stevens in South Bridgton. Betty to school.



Wednesday, March 11, 1959

John Crook died at hospital in Arbroath Scotland today. I cleaned up the whole house. Sally and girls called in p.m.



Thursday, March 12, 1959

A bad snowstorms all over New England. School stopped at noon. Bill and I downtown. Bought Mama her new clock radio for her bedroom. She paid $34.95 for it. John Crook died yesterday. Bill and Jean got the word today. Too bad, wish we lived closer at these times.



Friday, March 13, 1959 Bruce Hodgkins 6 months today

Partly cloudy. Wind blowed some. Bill and Billie plowed and shoveled snow. Mike up in p.m. No school. I done regular work.



Saturday, March 14, 1959

A very nice day. I cooked, done up the regular work. Bill didn’t do anything. Billie to town. Betty got the batteries for her radio. George and Dawn Parks called in p.m. Also Kennard and Raymond. Raymond here for supper. Mike and Betty took a walk.
