The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

November 13 - 18, 1958



Thursday, November 13, 1958

Bruce two months old. A nice day. I done up regular work, made out a Christmas order for Mama. Ilan, Holly and Randy called. Blanche called in evening, she undressed Bruce and fed him. Betty’s school pictures came.



Friday, November 14, 1958

Rained. Bill didn’t work. He got the TV from Don Chadbourne’s. It works good. Mama is going to buy it. To town in p.m. Dolores called. Also in evening Dawn, (?) George and David.



Saturday, November 15, 1958

Fair in a.m. Clouded up and rained in p.m. I was busy all day. Lot of work didn’t get done. Linwood Hill came in p.m. and worked on furnace. Lloyd bought pullets.



Sunday, November 16, 1958

A good day. Raymond had his wood sawed. Donald and Howard Allen. Kennard, Bill and Billie helped. Charlie, Jean, Bob, Blanche, Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called.



Monday, November 17, 1958

Cloudy. I didn’t do much. Linwood Hill came. They worked on furnace. Bill stayed home and helped. Betty up to Dawn’s to a surprise birthday party for Dawn.



Tuesday, November 18, 1958

Rained. I did a darned big wash. Bill home at noon. Bought me a new clothes line.
