The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 26 - March 3, 1959



Thursday, February 26, 1959 Wyvern A. Smith and Donald O. Ayres

A very nice day. I cleaned up the house. I ironed. Billie worked in p.m. over to Jim’s. In p.m. also Sylvia and Arthurlene Andrews called selling Avon. In evening Billie and I over to Aunt Ava’s. Billie worked at Chet’s in p.m. Kay up your in p.m. and for supper. Kennard called. Letter from Adair’s. Betty got Bill a nice wristwatch, me she got supplies for my desk. Billie worked at Chet’s.


Friday, February 27, 1959

A very nice day. I churned, done up the work. Betty made some cookies. In p.m. Billie got his haircut. He took me to town to do some shopping. Bill worked all day at Jim’s. In night, I got a call from Frances (Milan’s first wife). I also talked with Jackie. Billie and I called to see Dot and Forrest new home. It is very nice.



Saturday, February 28, 1959

Snowing this morning. Cooked, cleaned up the house. Bill worked over to Jim’s.



Sunday, March 1, 1959 Peg Crook Myles birthday

Kennard, Delores called. Aunt Ava, Uncle Lewis, Bob called. Bill and I down to Jean’s in p.m.



Monday, March 2, 1959 A Glorious Day

I washed and ironed today, cleaned the house up. School began today. Mama’s new quilt came today. Very pretty. Bill worked today over to Jim Chadbourne’s.



Tuesday, March 3, 1959 Warm

A very nice day. I cooked, cleaned up the house, churned. Cooked a hen. Bill down to Raymond in p.m. No work. Betty up to Dawn’s in evening. Mike came back from Auburn.
