The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 31 - February 5, 1959



Saturday, January 31, 1959

Cold and windy. I did a big wash. In p.m. Bill and I went to town. We settle the living room in late p.m. Mama got up and dressed today. Betty up to Dawn’s.



Sunday, February 1, 1959 Cold

A nice clear day, but awful cold. Bill and Billie worked over to Don Chadbourne’s. I ironed. Ken and Dolores, Fern and Lloyd called.



Monday, February 2, 1959 20 below this morning

A bitter cold day. I cleaned dishes and silver. Bill began to work at Fern’s papering and painting. It was 28 below in some places downtown.



Tuesday, February 3, 1959

A nice day. It warmed up today. Billie down to sign up. Bill worked at Ferns. I went down to Ferns in p.m. Betty got report card, good. Awful plane crashes.



Wednesday, February 4, 1959

A freezing rain last night. Awful slippery this morning. No school today. Billie and I to town. We bought some groceries etc. Bill down to Ferns today. Raymond called, also Kennard.




Thursday, February 5, 1959

A nice warm day. I cooked in a.m. In p.m. I went downtown with Fern and she picked out some wallpaper for her kitchen instead of painting at a dark green. So I stayed down there all p.m. and helped Bill paper. Betty came home and washed dishes and got supper. Two boys got drowned in the Charles River this p.m. In evening David Nevers and Mike Boutilier came up to play cards with Betty and Kay. Also Raymond called. Billie down to Ferns today.
