The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 10 - 15, 1959



Saturday, January 10, 1959

Cold. A nice clear day. Mike here today. Also David Nevers in p.m. I cooked all day, done up all the work. Thinking of Bruce. Bill worked at Jim’s. Billie up to Chet’s.



Sunday, January 11, 1959

Nice day. Done up the work in p.m. Wrote letters. Betty and Billie playing cards. Bill up to Hayd’s.



Monday, January 12, 1959

A nice warm day. I washed. Made out orders for Mama. I went to town with Billie. Kennard called in evening. Kay up here and stayed all night. I washed the rest of Bruce’s clothes, blankets etc.



Tuesday, January 13, 1959

Another warm day. I cleaned the back porch, cleaned up the shed chamber. Picked up the spare bedroom. Take care of the Christmas things. Got a good start on getting ready for Dorothea. I got the clothes in and ironed. Betty has a cold. She went up to Dawn’s tonight. Bill worked over to Jim’s in forenoon. In afternoon he and Billie hauled dressing for Raymond. Billie down to sign up in a.m. Hayd called and Lloyd in evening. Bill and I spent the evening over to Aunt Ava’s and Uncle Lewis’s.



Wednesday, January 14, 1959

A nice day. Bill didn’t work. Billie worked for Raymond. In p.m. Bill and I went over to see Donald Ayres at Pineland Training School at Pownal. He didn’t look very good. A terrible mess of pimples on his face. He is kind of thin. He has been sick and was under sedative. Betty to movies tonight with Mike.



Thursday, January 15, 1959

A very nice day. Warm. I cooked and churned in a.m. In p.m. Billie and I went to town and got paper, paint Muresco for Billie’s bedroom, hallway and kitchen.
