The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 16 - 20, 1959

Friday, January 16, 1959

A bad day. It rained last night and this morning it is all glare ice covered all over. Not any school. Not but a few cars on the road. Bill, Billie and I worked in the kitchen, bedroom and hallway. Got them ready to do. Betty cleaned out her desk drawers, read, played cards, watched TV. Mama in her room reading. A dismal day. Betty sick with cold.

Saturday, January 17, 1959

Wind came up and it got awful cold. Bill and I papered the hallway. Very pretty. Billie to town with Bob, up to Chet’s to work. Raymond here and had dinner. Kennard called in p.m. Betty up to Dawn’s.

A nice day, not too cold. Bill and I papered kitchen. Billie painted his room. Betty up to Dawn’s. Bob and Blanche called.

Monday, January 19, 1959

A nice day. Bill and I papered Billie’s bedroom. It clouded up and snowed in p.m. Billie painted today.

Tuesday, January 20, 1959

Bill and I finished the papering, did bathroom and upstairs hall. Billie to town. A fire last night in the George Bowley house and store on Main Street.
