The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 20 - 25, 1958 Merry Christmas



Saturday, December 20, 1958

Cold still. My check came for Bruce’s board. Billie got paid for his calves he sold. He and Betty to town and done their Christmas shopping. Betty finished Christmas tree.



Sunday, December 21, 1958

A nice day but COLD. AWFUL COLD TONIGHT. Ken and Delores called. Bob, Fern and Lloyd. I wrote letters. Didn’t do much here today.



Monday, December 22, 1958 COLD 20 Below

20 below zero this morning. Neither car would start. Hayd towed Bill. I got my permanent in a.m. In p.m. went to town and done my Christmas shopping. Bill didn’t work. Mr. Yates went to hospital.



Tuesday, December 23, 1958 Billie got hurt

Very nice day. 12° above. Bill worked. I washed, did some cooking. Tonight Billie sprained his ankle very bad. Went to Dr. Newths



Wednesday, December 24, 1958

A nice day. I did more cooking. Mike called to give Betty her present. Billie not out today, his ankle little better tonight. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os called. Bill over to Jim’s.



Thursday, December 25, 1958 Christmas day

Cold all day. Had a nice tree and gifts. Good dinner. Kennard here for dinner. In p.m. and eve, Fern and Lloyd, Kennie and Dot, Bob and Blanche, Ava and Lewis. Betty got her radio.
