The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

December 10 - 14, 1958



Wednesday, December 10, 1958

Cold awful cold. I didn’t do much. Mike came, kind of fussy. I cooked some.



Thursday, December 11, 1958 DONNIE gone one year today

Mike very fussy, sick with cold. In p.m. his mother came and got him. I cleaned wood work in kitchen, washed windows in living room, dining room and kitchen. Put up clean curtains in DR. Bill not working. Ray up tonight. White cat went tonight.



Friday, December 12, 1958

Not so cold. A nice day. I cleaned the upper cupboards in kitchen. Pictures came back from Bicknells. Betty to ball game tonight. Billie out in eve. Backed cards in p.m. Mike not here today.



Saturday, December 13, 1958

Lil gave me a very pretty blanket for crib. Cooked, cleaned up the house. Worked all day. Betty to movies with Mike and other girls and boy friends. Billie got through work today at Chet’s.



Sunday, December 14, 1958

Kind of cold. A nice day. Raymond here for dinner. Ken and Delores called. In p.m. Fern, Lloyd and Uncle Os called. I wrote letters.
