The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 21 - 25, 1959 House Fire at Jim Chadbourne's



Saturday, February 21, 1959

Today we got a letter from Dorothea in Detroit. A cold day. I cooked, we went down to Jean’s and downtown. Billie worked up to Chet’s.



Sunday, February 22, 1959

A bitter cold day. We went to Charlie’s funeral. A big funeral. Everything very nice. Bill and I went down after funeral. Fern, Lloyd, Bob and Blanche here. Bill worked at camps this a.m.



Monday, February 23, 1959 cold

18 below this morning. Bill and I down to Raymond this morning to see about a job. Going back in a few days. A house fire at Jim Chadbourne’s this a.m. Betty took over the kitchen today.



Tuesday, February 24, 1959

Very cold this morning, warmed up in day. Billie worked over to Jim’s in p.m. I churned, washed and cooked. Raymond called in p.m. Also Mike came up. Billie up to Chet’s.



Wednesday, February 25, 1959

10 below zero this morning. Warmed up in the day and a very nice warm clear sunny day. I cleaned up the whole house. Got the clothes in. Billie worked.
