The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

January 5 - 9, 1959



Monday, January 5, 1959

A very cold cold windy day. Bill didn’t work. I washed. Bill and Billie did some wiring in living room and bedroom. Bruce good today.



Tuesday, January 6, 1959 Jeffrey Dennis Adair 6 mos.

A bitter cold windy day. Ms. Kalwell called me this morning. She is coming up for Bruce tomorrow. I got the clothes in and ironed. I done all of Bruce washing and ironing and packing up his clothes. Billie got Betty. It was so cold. Bill finished the wiring. Now we have two more plugs in living room and Billie’s bedroom. Bill didn’t work.



Wednesday, January 7, 1959

Bruce Edward Hodgkin went today. We all loved him so much and hated to have him go. He wasn’t a well baby. A nice fair day not so cold. Bill fixed shelf in kitchen. Billie worked at Sid Gammons. Bill and I called at Hayd’s in evening. Very cold.



Thursday, January 8, 1959

Missed Bruce very much. Wish he was here. Didn’t do much today. Aunt Ava here in p.m. Cold and windy. Bill and I called at Fern and Lloyd’s today.



Friday, January 9, 1959

Cold today. Did up the housework. In p.m. Billie took me to town. Still miss Bruce. Bill worked over to Jim’s today.
