The blog posts below are taken from my grandmother's diaries. Althea Green Smith Crook was lovingly referred to as Nanny to her immediate family ~ thus her diaries are called Nanny's Diaries.

Nanny wrote in her diaries when she remembered to - mostly in the evening. There will be some years in which she didn't keep diaries and there will also be some days/weeks in her yearly diaries in which she skipped or forgot to write in them. For the most part, these are her words - written as she wrote them. There will be typos, forgotten punctuation, and other grammatical errors - but I am rewriting these as my Nanny originally wrote them.

As with all old handwriting, there are some entries that I can't quite make out - and these entries will be followed with a (?) to signify that this may or may not be correct or I can't figure out what she is trying to write.

Thank you Nanny for leaving us 50 years worth of memories! We miss you!

February 6 - 10, 1959 Dorothea Home After 2 years, 9 mos and 6 days!



Friday, February 6, 1959 DOROTHEA AND JEFFREY CAME Clifford Deming and Jeffrey is 7 mos. DOROTHEA AND JEFFREY came tonight.

Today Bill and I finished up at Ferns. She is much pleased. It looks so nice. We came home. Billie took me to town, I got new curtains for kitchen. I pressed and put them up. At about 9:30 PM we got a phone call from Dorothea from Logan Airport in Boston. She and Jeffrey were there. Bill and I got ready and met them at Portland airport at 10:45. First time for two years, nine months and six days since we have seen Dorothea. JEFFREY is the best little grandson. So glad they came.





Saturday, February 7, 1959

A nice day. Dorothea quite pleased to be home. She and Betty and Billie to town. They got dinner. Good. Jeffrey very cunning all day and so good. I churned. Aunt Ava and Uncle Lewis called. Also Bob, Blanche, Kennard and Raymond and Mike.





Sunday, February 8, 1959 Wanda Jean Harmon two yr.

Cold, we did a big wash. Dolores, Dawn, George, Rayburn, Joan, Karen, Kennie, Dot, Bob, Blanche, Fern, Lloyd, Uncle Os and Raymond called. Betty and Dorothea over to Phil’s and Barbra’s tonight. Jeffrey very good and so cunning.



Monday, February 9, 1959

A bitter cold. I done up the work and done some cleaning. Aunt Ava over in p.m. Dorothea cooked. Jeffrey is so good and cunning too. Letter from Esther, Susan broke her arm.



Tuesday, February 10, 1959

Jeffrey is so good and is smiling all the time. We are enjoying him so much. I got my hair set today. Blanche came over today. She and Dorothea called Joy. I cooked.
